SOURCE FLIGHT GLOBAL The Spanish navy’s first prototype upgraded Boeing AV-8B Harrier II has been transferred to the service’s Rota air base, having recently completed flight testing at Cassidian Spain’s San Pablo facilities near Seville.
Modifications to the AV-8B include new avionics equipment, structural improvements and the integration of the improved Rolls-Royce Pegasus 408A turbofan engine.
“Handover to the Spanish navy will take place on completion of the modification certification process,” says Cassidian.
Additional aircraft included in the modernisation programme are already in work at Cassidian Spain’s San Pablo maintenance, repair and overhaul centre.
The Spanish navy has an active fleet of 16 AV-8B/B+ strike aircraft and one TAV-8B trainer, says Flightglobal’s MiliCAS database. These were delivered between 1986 and 1997.
